In what situations is a speed reducer needed for an electric motor?

1. Gear reducers can achieve low speed and high torque.

In some applications, a relatively low speed is required, but a relatively high torque is needed. If the motor speed is controlled very low, low-speed operation is not optimal for some motors, especially stepper motors.
We can use a gear reducer to solve this problem. The function of a gear reducer is to reduce the speed and increase the output torque.

Speed and torque curve of stepper motor

For example, stepper motors are typically selected for speeds of 300-600 RPM, but in practice, only speeds below 100 RPM are needed, requiring higher torque. If a stepper motor is directly connected, the speed will be too low, and stepper motors don't have good low-speed performance. In this case, a gearbox with a reduction ratio of 5 can be added. The motor runs at 500 RPM, while the gearbox outputs 100 RPM, satisfying both the low-speed requirement and ensuring sufficient torque output.

2. Using a gearbox is more cost-effective when speed requirements are met.

Sometimes, the motor speed meets the requirements, but higher torque is needed. Method one is to choose a higher-power motor.
However, this method isn't necessarily the most cost-effective, as higher-power motors are relatively more expensive. Method two is to use a gearbox. Using a gearbox can meet the operating speed requirements, increase output torque, and save cost and space, making the advantages of using a gearbox obvious.

3. Using a gearbox has a certain effect on the motor.

Because of the added speed reducer, the load acts directly on the reducer, significantly reducing the force on the motor (1/reduction ratio), thus protecting the motor.
Especially under overload conditions, the load can cause considerable damage to the motor without a speed reducer.

Overload can damage the mechanism; if only the speed reducer fails, replacing it is more cost-effective.
Direct connection between the motor and load can easily damage the motor under overload conditions, making motor replacement relatively expensive, while replacing the speed reducer is much cheaper. When selecting

a speed reducer, you can generally find a matching model based on the motor model, and then choose a suitable speed reducer based on parameters such as speed, torque, reduction ratio, installation method, and installation dimensions.

Speed reducers also come in high-precision and standard-precision versions; higher precision speed reducers are more expensive.
A standard speed reducer might cost a few hundred yuan, while a precision speed reducer can cost thousands. Therefore, choose according to your specific needs.
