What is field weakening in motors?

The weak magnetic field function of the motor means that during the motor startup process, the motor control system will first apply a small current to the motor to make the motor rotor generate a certain degree of magnetic field, but it is not enough to make the motor run normally. This stage is called the weak magnetic field state of the motor.

The main function of the weak magnetic field function is to help the motor overcome static friction and dynamic friction during the starting process , making the motor start more smoothly, reducing the impact and stress during motor starting, and reducing the risk of damage to mechanical and electrical equipment.

The field weakening function is usually implemented in the motor's starting control system. Through the controller or inverter and other devices, a small current is first applied to the motor during the starting process to achieve the purpose of generating a weak magnetic field. Once the motor starts smoothly, the system will gradually increase the current to gradually reach the rated operating state of the motor.



The weakening magnetic field function can also be used for fault detection and protection in some cases. For example, during the operation of the motor, if the magnetic field or magnetic resistance of the motor is abnormal, the system can diagnose and eliminate the fault by applying weakening magnetic field to protect the safe operation of the motor and equipment. In some special cases, the weakening magnetic field function of the motor can also be used for specific application requirements, such as:

1. Reduce starting current shock: In some cases where it is necessary to limit the current shock of the power grid, by applying weak magnetic field, the current shock when the motor starts can be reduced, the impact on the power grid and equipment can be reduced, and the stability of the electrical system can be protected.

2. Reduce starting torque: For some applications that need to minimize torque shock during the startup process, such as scenarios where the mechanical shock generated during startup needs to be small, the weak magnetic function can gradually increase the torque, smooth the startup, and protect the mechanical transmission system.

3. Reduce starting power requirements: The weak magnetic function can help reduce the power requirements when the motor starts, especially for high-power motors or when power supply conditions are limited. It can reduce the impact on the power grid and electrical equipment and improve the energy efficiency of the system.

4. Prevent overload protection from being triggered: In some cases, the motor may be restricted by overload protection during startup. By applying weak magnetic field, the load on the motor during startup can be reduced, avoiding the triggering of overload protection and protecting the safe operation of the motor and system.

In general, the weakening magnetic field function of the motor plays an important role in smooth starting, equipment protection, energy saving, etc. Through the reasonable application of the weakening magnetic field function, the stability, reliability and safety of the motor system can be improved to meet the needs of different application scenarios.
