Date:2022-10-24   Author:XINDA MOTOR

Introduction: BLDC motor is actually a new type of mechatronic motor that emerged with the development of semiconductor electronic technology. It is the product of the combination of power electronics, microelectronics technology, control theory and motor technology. It contains two parts, motor and electronics.

  According to the statistics of Grand View Research, the market size of BLDC in 2021 is 17.9 billion US dollars, and the market size is expected to reach 22.3 billion US dollars in 2025. The compound annual growth rate is 5.7%.

  From the perspective of market structure, in the BLDC motor market, the Asian market accounts for the largest proportion, accounting for 46.94%, followed by the United States, accounting for 21.08%. In fact, there are many BLDC motor companies in Asia with good technical strength, but they are mainly concentrated in Japan, such as Nidec, Panasonic, Minebea, and Sanyo Electric. Domestically, it is still mainly in the catch-up stage. But it is foreseeable that the growth of BLDC motors in the future will mainly come from Asia, which in turn will mainly be in China.

Global Motor Controller Market.jpg

  The market share in Europe is not small, about 19%. Since Europe and the United States started relatively early, they have mastered many core technologies of BLDC motors. In the future, with the increasing demand for high-end BLDC motors in the global market, the market share in Europe and America will increase will also grow slowly. But the ratio is certainly not as high as in Asia.

  Industry chain and market structure of BLDC motor controller

  BLDC motor is actually a new type of mechatronic motor that appeared with the development of semiconductor electronic technology. It is the product of the combination of power electronics , microelectronics technology, control theory and motor technology. It consists of two parts: motor and electronics. The electronic part is generally what we often call the controller. This controller is called differently in different application scenarios, such as in household appliances such as soybean milk machines, washing machines, and refrigerators; electric hair dryers Personal care products such as toothbrushes, as well as power tools and other usage scenarios, are generally called smart controllers;

  In elevators, robots, machine tools, textile machines, automobiles and other application scenarios, they are also called frequency converters , servo systems , or directly called motor controllers, etc.

  According to statistics from Frost & Sullivan, the compound annual growth rate of the global intelligent controller industry from 2015 to 2019 was 5.9%. In 2019, the global intelligent controller industry market size reached 1.5 trillion US dollars. to about $2 trillion.

  China's servo market will reach 16.44 billion yuan in 2020, and it is expected to reach 29.77 billion yuan in 2025.

  Of course, because intelligent controllers, inverters, and servo systems can drive not only BLDC motors, but also ordinary AC motors, etc., the market size seems to be larger than the previously mentioned BLDC motors.

  In fact, the upstream raw materials of all BLDC motor controllers are basically the same, including IC chips , resistors and capacitors, isolators, sensors , diodes, transistors, MOSFETs, or IGBTs and other power devices.
  The downstream applications are also very extensive, mainly including household appliances, power tools, automotive electronics, smart home, medical and health, industrial robots , machine tools and so on.

  Among them, among the upstream raw materials, the core components are IC chips. The main suppliers are ST, TI, Microchip, Renesas, NXP, Infineon, Zhaoyi Innovation, Xiaohua Semiconductor, Smart, Zhongying Electronics, National Technology, Fengda Technology, etc.;

  The controller manufacturers mainly include Diehl, Invis, Topbond, Heertai, Netac Intelligence, Bestac, Inovance Technology, Leisai Intelligence, Siemens, Omron, Panasonic, Mitsubishi, Yaskawa Electric, Hechuan Technology , Jiangsu Rayleigh, Wolong Electric Drive, etc.;

  The main companies in the downstream sub-sectors include Midea, Haier, Siemens, Joyoung, Supor and other home appliance manufacturers in household appliances; Bosch, Black & Decker, TTI, etc. in the field of power tools; BorgWarner, Nidec, etc. in the field of automotive electronics. Tier 1 manufacturers such as Desay SV, as well as auto host manufacturers such as Tesla, BBA, and Wei Xiaoli.

  Controller upstream industry chain market situation

  The IC chips used in the controller mainly include SoC, DSP, FPGA, MCU and other types, among which MCU is the most widely used. Last year's MCU market was also very hot. According to a report from IC Insights, in 2021, the average selling price (ASP) of MCUs will increase by 10% to US$0.64; shipments will increase by 12% to 30.9 billion, and the market size will be US$19.7 billion , is expected to grow about 10% this year to $21.5 billion.

  In terms of categories, it is expected that the compound annual growth rate of sales of 32-bit MCUs will be about 9.4% in the future, 16-bit MCUs will remain at US$4.7 billion, and 4/8-bit MCUs will remain at around US$2.4 billion. grow again.

  From the perspective of market structure, the MCU market in China is mainly dominated by MCUs from overseas manufacturers. The top six MCU manufacturers, Renesas Electronics, Microchip, ST, NXP, Infineon and TI combined have exceeded 80%. % market share.

  Among the top six MCU manufacturers, Renesas mainly focuses on self-developed MCU cores, and the MCU products of other manufacturers are mainly based on ArmCortexM cores. According to the statistics of each company's official website, there are a total of 4,500 ArmCortex-M series products, accounting for 64% of the total number of 32-bit MCU part numbers.

  Of course, domestic MCU companies have developed rapidly in the past two years. At present, there are as many as 13 MCU-related companies listed in China, including Zhaoyi Innovation, Silan Micro, Zhongying Electronics, National Technology, Espressif Technology, Chipsea Technology, etc. , There are also BYD Semiconductor, Zhongwei Semiconductor, Hengshuo Semiconductor, Huimang Microelectronics, etc. in the process of listing, as well as smart, Xiaohua Semiconductor, Xinwangwei, Hangshun, Jihai Technology and other well-developed MCU companies.

  Another major category of products in the controller is power devices, which include products such as MOSFETs, power ICs, IPMs, or IGBTs. According to Simmou research statistics, the global power IC market size in 2021 will be 30.5 billion US dollars. Stable in 2022. In 2023, the sharp decline in global semiconductor chip, especially DRAM and other memory prices, inventory digestion, and market competition will lead to a sharp decline in the global semiconductor market and global power IC, and will resume growth after that.

  But this year's global power semiconductors are still in short supply. In March this year, ST issued a price increase letter. Since the increase in raw material and logistics costs could not be digested, it decided to increase the price of all its product lines during Q2 in 2022; Infineon issued a price increase letter in February, which shows that the current power Demand for semiconductors remains high and supply remains tight.

  Among them, TI, Infineon, ST, ADI, ON Semiconductor, Renesas, NXP and other international semiconductor suppliers have a relatively high market share. Bangwei, Nanxin, Mingwei Electronics, Shanghai Belling, etc. will perform well in the market in 2021.

  According to Omdia statistics, China's power semiconductor market space in 2021 is 18.2 billion US dollars, and it is expected that by 2025, it is expected to reach 19.5 billion US dollars, with a compound growth rate of 4.55% compared to 2021.

  IGBT and silicon carbide MOSFET are the focus of the current power device development. In addition, according to IHS data, the size of China's power semiconductor market in 2020 will be US$15.3 billion, a year-on-year increase of 6.3%. At present, China accounts for about 35% of the global scale and is the world's largest power semiconductor market.

  In terms of silicon MOSFETs, in 2020, the market size of silicon MOSFETs is about 7.5 billion US dollars, and Yole expects a compound annual growth rate of 3.8% from 2020 to 2026, most of which comes from the consumer electronics and automotive markets.

  In terms of IGBT, Star's main motor controller's vehicle-grade IGBT modules have begun to be supplied to overseas markets in large quantities. According to statistics, Star has already installed 500,000 vehicles, but it is mainly A00-class vehicles and some A-class vehicles; Times Electric has obtained many designated automotive projects. With the production capacity of the second phase, vehicle-standard IGBTs are expected to increase in volume. ;Macro Micro Technology started mass production of automotive-grade IGBTs. In general, domestic enterprises have great opportunities.

  In the mid-to-high-end MOSFET and IGBT mainstream device market, China mainly relies on imports, and is basically monopolized by European, American and Japanese companies. At present, the market share of domestic power semiconductor leading enterprises is still low, which requires the follow-up of domestic power device manufacturers. It is believed that with the rise of the BLDC motor market, it is a rising opportunity for domestic power device manufacturers.

  In particular, the application of third-generation semiconductors such as SiC and gallium nitride has exploded the SiC market since Tesla used ST's SiC module products. In 2021, the global SiC market size will be US$1.137 billion, and the compound growth rate in the next five years is expected to reach 28%. Currently the main players are ST, Infineon, Wolfspeed, Roma, ON Semiconductor and Mitsubishi. There are many new players in China, and the products are mainly SBD, and MOSFET is relatively small.

  In terms of GaN, the market size in 2020 is $53 million and is expected to reach $1.1 billion by 2025. Moreover, there are already applications of GaN products in motor drives. At the end of last year, I saw a GaN motor drive solution jointly developed by Nexperia and Shanghai Electric Drive at the China International Import Expo, which is mainly used in A00-class vehicles. In addition, TI is also developing related programs.

  In terms of isolators, the main players include overseas manufacturers, TI, ADI, SiliconLabs (already sold to Skyworks), as well as domestic manufacturers Naxinwei, Chuantuwei and Rongpai. Siruipu has also recently launched isolator products, mainly for factory automation, power automation, motor drive, power control and other application scenarios.

  Motor Controller Market Landscape

  There are nearly 30 controller-related companies listed in China, many of which have only been listed in the past two years. Among the 21 motor controller-related companies with the highest market value, Inovance Technology has the highest market value of 154.4 billion yuan.

  Inovance Technology mainly focuses on the main business channel of automation, digitization and intelligence. The main products include frequency converters, elevator integration, PLC , servo systems, industrial robots, as well as electric drive systems and power supply systems for new energy vehicles . Last year's revenue reached 17.9 billion yuan, with a net profit of 3.6 billion yuan.

Domestic listed companies.jpg

  Here, the companies that do the controller include Topbond, Heertai, Zhenbang Intelligent, Netac Intelligent, Ruide Intelligent and other listed companies.

  The companies that make frequency converters and servo systems include Huichuan Technology, Hechuan Technology, Sine Electric, Flextronics, Leisai Intelligence, Xinjie Electric, etc.;

  Electronic enthusiasts have made a statistic on the gross profit rate of these 21 listed controller companies in the past three years. From this table, we can clearly see that the gross profit rate of almost all companies in 2021 is lower than that in 2020, while in 2020 Almost all gross margins are higher than in 2019.

  I believe this is not unrelated to the price hike in the semiconductor industry last year. The cost of raw materials has risen sharply.

  According to the information we have learned: TI has strategically adjusted, focusing more on power supply and driver chips. Last year, the increase was the largest, ranging from 5% to 70%. The lower the ASP, the greater the increase; ST products from MOS to MCU have all increased. Yes, it has risen by about 22%; NXP's products have risen by about 15%. Of course, this is the price of the original factory, not the increase in the spot market.

  However, people in the industry generally expect that the price increase should be coming to an end now, because the demand of some consumers has dropped, and if the price rises again, many demand may be suppressed.

  We see that the price of MOSFET has also been gradually falling. Beginning in 2019, Bandai in the United States was replaced by Taiwan MOS tubes very quickly. The price of MOSFET has risen in Q3-Q4 last year, and the price has dropped slightly this year. It is expected that there may be a window of price reduction for MOSFETs this year.

  In fact, in addition to IC and MOSFET, transformers are related to copper prices and magnetic cores (the magnetic core rose by 50% last year, and the overall transformer rose by 8-15%). However, this year, the transformer is on a downward trend.

  In addition, we counted the R&D investment of these 21 companies, and found that 10% of the R&D investment companies basically made industrial and automotive controllers, and the R&D investment of home appliance and power tool companies was basically about 4%.

  But the good news is that, from the perspective of R&D investment in the past three years, in fact, the R&D investment of most companies has increased to varying degrees every year.

  Epilogue

  In terms of market applications, the application of BLDC motors is actually very extensive. Most active things require motors, specifically, fans, pumps, electric vehicles, power tools, compressors, agricultural machinery, and automotive applications. In recent years, there have also been some new applications in the application of BLDC motors, such as floor scrubbers in the vacuum cleaner category, high-speed air ducts in hair dryers, automatic lawn mowers, etc. In addition, due to the improvement of energy efficiency requirements, some previous Where brushed motors are used, BLDC motors are also beginning to be replaced, such as applications such as power tools, air conditioners, and washing machines. In the future, the prospect of BLDC motors is still quite good.
