May Mobility will start full driverless commercial operation in 2023

On July 12, May Mobility, a self-driving taxi and shuttle startup based in Michigan, USA, announced that the company has completed a $111 million Series C financing. This round of financing was led by Mirai Creation Fund II, a subsidiary of Japan’s SPARX Group. , LG Technology Ventures and Maven Ventures and other institutions followed suit. The company announced in January that it had closed an $83 million funding round, bringing the company's total funding to date to $194 million.

May Mobility said this round of financing will be used to increase the number of engineering staff, expand the global customer base, improve the user experience, and further enhance the technology.

In addition to disclosing the new round of financing, May Mobility also said the company will continue to work with Toyota on modifications based on the Toyota Sienna Autono-MaaS automotive platform. It is reported that the Sienna Autono-MaaS vehicle platform modified by May Mobility has already started testing and demonstration in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and is expected to be deployed in other public deployment sites by the end of 2022. The Toyota Sienna Autono-MaaS, equipped with the May Mobility autonomous driving system, will be available this fall.

Additionally, May Mobility said it has begun initial development work on the Toyota e-Palette, a battery-electric vehicle platform designed to further transform future mobility.


May Mobility also said it has received commercial support from investment partners in this round. Tokio Marine and State Farm Ventures became the first U.S. insurers to invest in self-driving cars, and it is important to help design the future of insurance to support self-driving cars. And Japanese tire maker Bridgestone, May Mobility will use Bridgestone algorithms to track tire health and predict tread wear.

Edwin Olson, CEO of May Mobility, said: "With the closing of this latest investment round, May Mobility continues to accelerate our technology, business development and platform enhancements globally. Our New investors, and our continued strategic partnership with Toyota and others, will allow us to begin fully driverless commercial operations in 2023 and continue to expand into new markets."
